Mayn Idea SquidGuard Help Center

squidGuard is an open-source Web filtering solution. It is meant to be used with the Squid proxy server program.

Here is the official squidGuard site

squidGuard now competes with several commercial or semi-commercial Web filtering solutions. I like squidGuard best because:

bulletIt integrates well with the squid proxy server, without requiring a cache hierarchy.
bulletIt is entirely open-source.
bulletSite-blocking databases are (at this time) available free of charge from various sites

However, squidGuard is difficult to configure correctly. This is mainly due to the following problems:

bullet The documentation at the official site is out of date
bullet The program does not write to the system log, only to its own logfiles
bullet If the logfiles are not already created and set with the right permissions, the program cannot report any errors.
bulletIf squidGuard encounters any errors during its operation, it completely stops filtering.

I've created the following resources to try to help users to get squidGuard working:

The "FAQ-Plus" (supplement to the official squidGuard FAQ)
"Step-by-step" installation checklist
Example configuration file with notes
Using "ident" with squid and squidGuard to identify users
Script to automatically download blacklist files
User discussion group

The discussion groups are to supplement the main squidguard mailing list. The main mailing list has answers to many questions, and there is an easy way to search its archives, which are kept here (the AIMSGROUP mailing list archive.) However, since I occasionally receive questions about squidGuard or about this site, I thought it would be worth a try to see if a new discussion group would be useful. That way, everyone can see the questions and answers, as well as contribute to them. Let me know what you think! (You can also subscribe to the discussion group via RSS.)
(I don't intend to subscribe to the main mailing list, as I would rather not deal with the email traffic.)
